Maximizing Small Workspaces

PostedMarch 25, 2025

Designing a small workspace doesn’t have to feel like a challenge. In fact, with a few thoughtful choices, you can turn even the tiniest office into a comfortable, functional, and inspiring environment. We turned to one of our designers at West Business Interiors, Julie Taylor, to see what she had to say on the topic.

Lighting and Color

When it comes to lighting, Julie suggests aiming for something that feels as close to natural daylight as possible. “It can reduce blurred vision, headaches, and eyestrain,” she says. But if you can’t get enough natural light in your space, don’t worry, an LED desk lamp with adjustable settings is a great solution. You can easily switch from bright white light when you’re deep in work to a warmer tone when you’re unwinding.

As for color, lighter tones work wonders in making a space feel larger. Soft blues and greens, for example, create a calming atmosphere while helping you focus. Julie mentions, “Blues and greens tend to increase productivity and calmness, followed by yellow and orange.” On the other hand, darker colors can make a space feel more enclosed, so using them sparingly in a small office is the safest option. But reds? They tend to rev up your energy in a “fight or flight” way, so best to be aware of this when decorating.

Functionality and Comfort

When working with a small office, maximize what you’ve got. “Assess your space to identify optimization opportunities,” Julie says. Think about vertical storage—shelves above your desk or wall-mounted organizers can free up valuable desk and floor space.

Don’t forget about your comfort! The use of ergonomics is important in all office spaces. A comfortable task chair, an adjustable keyboard tray, and a monitor arm can make all the difference. It’s about finding that balance between maximizing space and making sure you’re comfortable.

Furniture and Layout

When it comes to furniture, you want to keep it functional and flexible. In a small office, furniture that serves multiple purposes will be your best option. “Go with wall art that can also double as an acoustic panel, or use plants that improve the air quality,” she says. Small changes like this can make your office feel more like “your” office, without sacrificing space or functionality.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, your small office should work for you. It should be a space where you feel comfortable, creative, and productive. By thinking about how you use your space, choosing furniture wisely, and picking the right lighting and colors, you can transform even the smallest office into something special. Don’t overcomplicate things. Keep it simple and comfortable, and you’ll love the space you’ve created.
